MAKE THINGS

Notes

Writing, blocks, links and mentions, templates, and asking the AI to write with you.

Starting a note

  • Blank note opens an empty page. Nothing is saved until you write on it.
  • Write it with the AI opens the composer: describe the note and it is written for you, cited where your documents support it.
  • From a template begins a note from one you marked as a template.

A note saves itself as you type; the header says Saving…, then Saved.

Blocks

Type / at the start of a line for the block menu, or use the + beside a block. Search it by name.

  • Text: text, three sizes of heading, quote, callout.
  • Lists: bulleted, numbered, to-do, toggle.
  • Media: picture (drop or paste one too), file from your documents, bookmark of a web page.
  • Advanced: code, equation, divider, table, columns, a sheet read live into the page, and a synced block that shows a block of another note and stays in step with it.

A sheet or synced block asks what to show as soon as it is added: choose the sheet, or the note and then the block. Markdown shortcuts work as you type: # for a heading, - for a bullet, [] for a to-do, > for a quote, --- for a divider.

The handle beside each block opens Turn into, Comment, Duplicate and Delete. Turning a block into another keeps its words, and a cited sentence stays cited.

Formatting, links and mentions

Select text for the formatting toolbar: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, inline code, Link, four text colours and four highlights.

  • Link (or Ctrl+K with text selected) takes http, https or mailto links; a bare domain gets https:// added.
  • Type @ in a note to mention another note, a sheet, a deck or a document. The mention shows that thing's current name, opens it when clicked, and the note it names lists yours under “Mentioned in”.
  • The ⋯ menu sets the typeface (Default, Serif or Mono), Small text and Full width.

Writing with the AI

With a note open, the composer either answers a question about it or proposes an edit. An edit appears as a diff to review: Apply the changes you want, or Discard.

  • With the AI Researcher on, an edit is written from your documents and the web, and every paragraph it adds is cited in the note's style; off, the AI edits the note in its own words. A new note asked for with the AI Researcher on is researched: a plan to approve comes first, then a cited report (see Research).
  • Select blocks first to change only those.
  • The ⋯ menu's Continue writing proposes the next paragraphs, and Summarise this note proposes a summary at its head. A summary says when the note has changed since it was written.

Find, comments, history and templates

  • Ctrl+F finds and replaces, including inside folded toggles.
  • Ctrl+Shift+M opens Comments and History: comment on a block, reply, resolve; step back through edits.
  • ⋯ → Version history restores an earlier version of the whole note.
  • ⋯ → Use as a template makes the note a starting point for new ones. A note begun from a template starts uncited: the words are yours until you cite them.
